Airport procedures 2026: Check-in, Security, Boarding

A typical European flight follows these six steps – allow around 2 hours in total, 3 hours for long-haul flights.

120 mins before departure

Arrive at Airport

European flights: 2 hours early. Long-haul: 3 hours. During holidays and peak times, arrive 30 minutes earlier – queues at check-in and security can be unpredictable. Details in the timing guide.

90–120 mins before departure

Check-in & Bag Drop

Online check-in saves time – get your boarding pass on mobile or print it out. Drop off suitcases at the counter or self-bag-drop. Keep hand luggage with you for later security screening. Check-in desks close 45 minutes before departure (Ryanair 40 minutes).

60–75 mins before departure

Passport Control (Non-Schengen Only)

Only for flights outside Schengen area (USA, UK, Turkey, Asia). Have your passport ready. Within EU/Schengen area this step doesn't apply – ID card is often sufficient.

45–60 mins before departure

Security Screening

Remove laptop and liquids (100ml) into separate trays. Take off jacket, belt, shoes if required. At modern CT scanners (FRA, MUC) you can leave liquids in your bag.

30–45 mins before departure

Boarding at Gate

Be at the gate on time – boarding usually begins 30 minutes before departure. Priority passengers board first, then economy by groups. Gates can change at short notice, so watch the monitors.
