Gently clean and care for leather bags

Last updated: April 2026 · Care products and techniques vary according to leather type. For high-end designer handbags, always follow manufacturer recommendations or use professional cleaning.

A well-maintained leather bag lasts 20 years and longer – and often looks better after 10 years than on the day of purchase. The natural patina is the great advantage of leather over synthetic materials. But this requires regular care. This guide shows you how to properly clean, care for and store your leather handbag – step by step.

The 4 Most Important Leather Types

Smooth Leather

Classic, smooth surface, easy to care for. Usually cowhide – lasts for decades.

Nappa Leather

Soft, supple, fine-grained. Often used for premium handbags – sensitive to moisture.

Suede / Nubuck

Velvety-rough surface. Very sensitive – requires different care products than smooth leather.

Patent Leather

High-gloss, plastic-like coating. Only damp cloth needed, no leather conditioner.

Important: Before beginning care, identify the leather type. Wrong products can leave stains or ruin the structure. When in doubt, test on an inconspicuous area (e.g. inside of bag).

4 Steps to Perfect Leather Care

1
Step 1 · Clean

Remove dust and dirt

Wipe surface with soft, dry cloth or leather brush. For light dirt, a slightly damp microfibre cloth can help – then dry immediately afterwards. Never use water on nubuck or suede!

2
Step 2 · Condition

Apply leather conditioner or leather balm

Apply thinly with soft cotton cloth (circular movements). Allow to penetrate for 10–15 minutes, then polish with clean cloth. Frequency: every 3–6 months depending on usage.

3
Step 3 · Waterproof

Protect against moisture

Apply spray from 20–30 cm distance, spray bag completely. Allow to dry for 24 hours, ideally in fresh air. Particularly important: waterproof before autumn/winter rain season.

4
Step 4 · Store

Preserve shape and prevent mould

Store in breathable fabric dust bag, not in plastic. Stuff with acid-free tissue paper or old newspaper. Store cool, dry and dark. Don't hang – handles can deform.
