Anyone flying with Eurowings who needs more than hand luggage can't avoid checked baggage – and the cost depends heavily on the fare booked. Eurowings offers three weight classes: 12 kg, 23 kg and 32 kg. In the BASIC fare, every piece of luggage is an extra purchase, in the SMART fare a 23 kg suitcase is already included, and in BIZclass two 32 kg pieces travel free of charge. Eurowings checked baggage 2026 – the weight classes at a glance

The ticket price with Eurowings includes in all fares a small bag (40 × 30 × 25 cm), such as a laptop bag, handbag or small backpack. Anything beyond that – large cabin baggage or checked baggage – depends on the fare booked. Unlike some other airlines, Eurowings doesn't specify a dimension limit in centimetres for checked baggage: only the weight counts, split into the three classes of 12, 23 and 32 kg.

• Just a small bag (40 × 30 × 25 cm): nothing to add – included in every fare.
• Short trip, small suitcase: 12 kg checked baggage in the BASIC fare from €17 – the cheapest add-on option.
• Classic holiday, 1–2 weeks: 23 kg checked baggage – already included in the SMART fare, can be added in the BASIC fare from €18.

12 kg checked baggage – the affordable entry-level option

The 12 kg baggage item is the most affordable add-on in the BASIC fare, from €17. It's worthwhile for short trips of 2 to 4 days, where the small bag isn't enough but a 23 kg suitcase would be too much. Unlike the large cabin baggage (55 × 40 × 23 cm, which comes on board), this piece of luggage is checked in at the counter and travels in the cargo hold.

The right suitcase for this is a lightweight cabin trolley. Important when packing: 12 kg is quickly reached with a hardside suitcase that weighs 2 to 2.5 kg empty – a luggage scale helps you check this in advance.

23 kg checked baggage – the classic choice for holidays

For most holiday trips, the 23 kg baggage item is the right choice: in the BASIC fare it costs from €18 online, while in the SMART fare it's already included in the ticket price. A second 23 kg baggage item costs from €75 in both fares.

Since Eurowings doesn't specify a size limit for checked baggage, practically any normal suitcase in size M (around 64 to 69 cm) or L (up to about 80 cm) is suitable. The only constraint is the weight. Here's how to calculate it:

32 kg checked baggage – for heavy packers and BIZclass

Anyone travelling with a particularly large amount of luggage should book a 32 kg baggage item (BASIC from €67 online). In BIZclass, two 32 kg baggage items are already included – along with two large cabin baggage items. 32 kg is also the absolute upper limit per piece of luggage: for safety reasons, Eurowings will generally not carry anything heavier.

Excess baggage at Eurowings: €15 per kilo – how to avoid it

If a piece of luggage exceeds the booked weight, Eurowings charges an excess baggage fee of €15 per additional piece of luggage and per kilogram at the airport, according to eurowings.com. The alternative is to simply book the next higher weight class (23 instead of 12 kg, 32 instead of 23 kg) – this is almost always cheaper than paying excess baggage fees at the counter. The absolute upper limit remains 32 kg per piece of luggage.

Empty weight: the underestimated cost factor

3 tips to avoid excess baggage with Eurowings

1. Weigh it at home: A digital luggage scale costs less than a single kilo of excess baggage.
2. Pack heavy items in your cabin baggage: books, chargers and shoes can go in the small bag (40 × 30 × 25 cm) or the large cabin baggage item – neither of these is weighed together with the checked baggage at the Eurowings check-in counter.
3. Book the right weight class straight away: if you tend to end up just over 12 or 23 kg, it works out cheaper to book the next higher class than to pay €15 excess baggage per kilo at the airport.

Which suitcase suits Eurowings checked baggage?

Since Eurowings doesn't set a dimension limit for checked baggage, choosing a suitcase is mainly about weight, durability and volume:

• For 12 kg: a lightweight cabin trolley under 2.5 kg empty weight, so that as much of the weight allowance as possible remains for the contents. Selection: Cabin suitcases.
• For 23 kg: size M with 64 to 69 cm and around 60 to 80 litres. An empty weight of up to 3.5 kg leaves just under 20 kg of packing capacity. Selection: Medium suitcases.
• For 32 kg: size L (75 to 80 cm) or a suitcase with an expansion compartment. Selection: Large suitcases.
• Families and couples: those travelling together often combine a larger suitcase (23 kg) with a smaller one (12 kg) instead of two of the same size – a luggage set covers both sizes.

Sports equipment baggage at Eurowings

Anyone bringing sports equipment books sports baggage instead of a normal piece of luggage: according to eurowings.com, skis and snowboards with accessories cost from €30, while golf equipment, bicycles, diving gear, surfboards and musical instruments cost from €50. Sports baggage may also weigh no more than 32 kg.

What's not allowed in Eurowings checked baggage?

Travelling with children

For children under 2 years old, the SMART fare includes a second piece of luggage; in the BASIC fare, the first 23 kg baggage item is free for them. According to Eurowings, pushchairs, buggies, travel cots and child car seats are generally transported free of charge in the cargo hold, up to two items per child aged up to 11. Eurowings vs. Ryanair & Lufthansa on checked baggage

With Ryanair, checked baggage is an add-on product except in the Plus and Family Plus packages (one item up to 20 kg each), with a fixed size limit (81 × 119 × 119 cm). With Eurowings, a 23 kg baggage item is included in the SMART fare, but can also be added in the cheapest BASIC fare – without any dimension limit, however. With Lufthansa, no checked baggage is included on European flights in Economy Basic and Economy Light; a baggage item of up to 23 kg is only included from Economy Comfort or Flex upwards (source: lufthansa.com, as of 28/10/2026).
