If you need more than just hand luggage with Eurowings, you can't avoid checked baggage – and the cost depends heavily on the tariff you've booked. Eurowings offers three weight classes: 12 kg, 23 kg and 32 kg. In the BASIC tariff, every piece of luggage is an extra purchase, in the SMART tariff a 23 kg case is already included, and in BIZclass two 32 kg pieces travel with you for free. Eurowings checked baggage 2026 – the weight classes at a glance

The ticket price with Eurowings includes a small bag (40 × 30 × 25 cm) in all tariffs, for example a laptop bag, handbag or small backpack. Anything beyond that – large hand luggage or checked baggage – depends on the tariff you've booked. Unlike some other airlines, Eurowings doesn't state a size limit in centimetres for checked baggage: only weight counts, split into the three classes of 12, 23 and 32 kg.

• Just a small bag (40 × 30 × 25 cm): nothing to add – included in every tariff.
• Short trip, small suitcase: 12 kg checked baggage in the BASIC tariff from €17 – the cheapest add-on option.
• Classic holiday, 1–2 weeks: 23 kg checked baggage – already included in the SMART tariff, and available in the BASIC tariff from €18.
• Lots of luggage or business travel: 32 kg checked baggage, or go straight for the BIZclass tariff with 2 × 32 kg included.

12 kg checked baggage – the affordable entry-level option

The 12 kg piece of luggage is the cheapest add-on in the BASIC tariff, from €17. It's worthwhile for short trips of 2 to 4 days, where the small bag isn't enough but a 23 kg case would be too much. Unlike large hand luggage (55 × 40 × 23 cm, which comes on board with you), this piece of luggage is handed in at check-in and flies in the hold.

The right case for this is a lightweight cabin trolley. Important when packing: 12 kg is quickly reached with a hard-shell suitcase weighing 2 to 2.5 kg empty – a luggage scale helps you check this in advance.

23 kg checked baggage – the classic choice for holidays

For most holiday trips, the 23 kg piece of luggage is the right choice: in the BASIC tariff it costs from €18 online, while in the SMART tariff it's already included in the ticket price. A second 23 kg piece of luggage costs from €75 in both tariffs.

Since Eurowings doesn't state a size limit for checked baggage, practically any normal size M suitcase (around 64 to 69 cm) or size L (up to about 80 cm) is suitable. The only limiting factor is weight. Here's how to calculate it:

32 kg checked baggage – for heavy packers and BIZclass

If you're bringing a lot with you, book a 32 kg piece of luggage (BASIC from €67 online). In BIZclass, two 32 kg pieces of luggage are included – along with two large pieces of hand luggage and a reserved hand luggage locker. 32 kg is also the absolute upper limit per piece of luggage: for safety reasons, Eurowings will not carry anything heavier.

Excess baggage at Eurowings: €15 per kilo – how to avoid it

If a piece of luggage exceeds the booked weight, Eurowings charges an excess baggage fee of €15 per additional piece of luggage and per kilogram at the airport, according to eurowings.com. The alternative is to book the next weight class up straight away (23 instead of 12 kg, 32 instead of 23 kg) – this is almost always cheaper than paying excess baggage at the counter. The absolute upper limit remains 32 kg per piece of luggage.

Empty weight: the underestimated cost factor

3 tips to avoid excess baggage with Eurowings

1. Weigh it at home: a digital luggage scale costs less than a single kilo of excess baggage.
2. Put heavy items in your hand luggage: books, chargers and shoes belong in your small bag (40 × 30 × 25 cm) or your large piece of hand luggage – Eurowings doesn't weigh either of these together with your checked baggage at check-in.
3. Book the right weight class straight away: if you tend to end up just over 12 or 23 kg, booking the next class up works out cheaper than paying €15 per kilo in excess baggage at the airport.

Which suitcase suits Eurowings checked baggage?

Since Eurowings doesn't set a size limit for checked baggage, choosing a suitcase is mainly about weight, sturdiness and volume:

• For 12 kg: a lightweight cabin trolley under 2.5 kg empty weight, so as much of the weight limit as possible is left for the contents. Selection: Hand luggage cases.
• For 23 kg: size M with 64 to 69 cm and around 60 to 80 litres. An empty weight of up to 3.5 kg leaves you with almost 20 kg of packing capacity. Selection: Medium-sized suitcases.
• For 32 kg: size L (75 to 80 cm) or a suitcase with an expansion compartment. Selection: Large suitcases.
• Families and couples: if you're travelling together, it's often worth combining a larger suitcase (23 kg) with a smaller one (12 kg) rather than two of the same size – a suitcase set covers both sizes.

Sports luggage with Eurowings

If you're bringing sports equipment, book sports luggage instead of a normal piece of luggage: according to eurowings.com, skis and snowboards with accessories cost from €30, while golf luggage, bicycles, diving equipment, surfboards and musical instruments cost from €50. Sports luggage may also weigh no more than 32 kg.

What's not allowed in Eurowings checked baggage?

Travelling with children

For children under 2, a second piece of luggage is included in the SMART tariff; in the BASIC tariff, the first 23 kg piece of luggage is free for them. According to Eurowings, prams, pushchairs, travel cots and child car seats are generally carried free of charge in the hold, up to two items per child up to age 11. Eurowings vs. Ryanair & Lufthansa on checked baggage

With Ryanair, checked baggage is always an add-on with a fixed size limit (80 × 120 × 120 cm). With Eurowings, a 23 kg piece of luggage is included in the SMART tariff, but can also be added on in the cheapest BASIC tariff – just without a stated size limit.
