Suitcase guide: how to find the right travel luggage
The right suitcase size based on trip length
Plan for about 50 liters of suitcase volume per week of vacation. For winter trips with bulky clothing, allow 30–40% more space.
- Carry-on luggage (S): 55 cm, 30–40 liters – for 2–5 days or as an addition to checked luggage
- Medium (M): 60–69 cm, 60–80 liters – best-selling size for 1–2 weeks of standard vacation
- Large (L): 70–79 cm, 90–110 liters – for 2–3 weeks or winter holidays
- Extra large (XL): 80+ cm, 120+ liters – long trips or family vacations
Hard shell suitcase vs. soft luggage
Hard shell suitcases made of polycarbonate offer maximum protection: waterproof, shatter-resistant and stackable – ideal for air travel and fragile items. Soft luggage is lighter, more flexible thanks to an expansion gusset, and offers exterior pockets for quick access – perfect for car and train travel. 65% of our customers choose hard shells, as most buy primarily for air travel.
4 wheels or 2 wheels?
4-wheel suitcases (spinners) can be steered in any direction with one finger and roll along beside you on their own – ideal for airports and smooth floors. 2-wheel suitcases have larger, more robust wheels and do not tip over when standing – better for cobblestones and uneven paths. 78% of our customers now choose 4 wheels, as modern double wheels also run smoothly on uneven ground.
Material: polycarbonate, ABS or aluminum?
Polycarbonate is the premium material: extremely impact-resistant, feather-light and returns to its original shape after deformation. Samsonite and Titan rely on pure Makrolon polycarbonate. ABS is the more affordable alternative – solid for occasional travelers, but heavier and less flexible. Aluminum stands for durability and an elegant design, but it adds significantly more weight. Our recommendation: For frequent travelers, polycarbonate is worth it; for 1–2 trips per year, ABS is sufficient.

Frequently asked questions about buying a suitcase
What suitcase size do I need for a 1-week vacation?
For a one-week vacation, we recommend a medium-sized suitcase (M) with a height of 60–69 cm and a capacity of 60–80 liters. That’s enough for 7–10 outfits plus shoes and a toiletry bag. For winter trips with bulky clothing, you should choose size L (70–79 cm). Packing tip: rolling instead of folding saves up to 30% space.
Hard-shell suitcase or soft luggage – which is better?
That depends on your type of trip. Hard-shell suitcases made of polycarbonate offer better protection, are waterproof and stackable – ideal for air travel. Soft luggage is lighter, more flexible (expansion gusset for 25% more volume) and offers exterior pockets – perfect for car and train travel. For frequent air travelers, we recommend a hard shell; for flexible travelers, soft luggage.
What does TSA lock mean and do I need one?
TSA stands for Transport Security Administration – the US transportation security authority. A TSA lock can be opened by security officers with a master key without damaging the suitcase. For trips to the USA, a TSA lock is strongly recommended, as suitcases without a TSA lock may be forced open. It also provides additional security for other international air travel.
How many liters should a carry-on suitcase have?
A carry-on suitcase should have a volume of 30–40 liters and a maximum size of 55×40×20 cm. Important weight limits: Lufthansa max. 8 kg, Ryanair max. 10 kg (Priority), Eurowings max. 8 kg. Look for lightweight materials such as polycarbonate so more weight allowance remains for your luggage. For 2–3 days, 30 liters is enough; for 4–5 days, choose 38–40 liters.
Which suitcase brand is the best?
That depends on your budget: Samsonite is the global market leader with premium polycarbonate and up to 10 years warranty (from €150). Titan offers German quality with well-designed features (from €100). American Tourister delivers Samsonite quality at a lower price (from €70). Travelite is the budget champion with solid value for money (from €49). For frequent travelers, investing in Samsonite or Titan is worthwhile.
Is a luggage set worth it, or is buying individual pieces better?
A luggage set is 20–30% cheaper than buying separately – with a 3-piece set, you save €50–100. Sets are worthwhile if you travel several times a year (different trip lengths) or if you need different sizes as a family/couple. The most popular combination: S (55 cm carry-on) + M (65 cm) + L (75 cm). If you only travel 1–2 times per year, a single suitcase in the right size is enough.
