Carry-On Luggage

The allowed dimensions for carry-on luggage vary depending on the airline. As a general rule: Maximum 55 x 40 x 20 cm and 8 kg weight. For budget airlines like Ryanair or Wizz Air, the requirements may be smaller – while premium airlines often allow 10–12 kg. It is worthwhile to check the airline's baggage policies before the flight.

Only liquids up to 100 ml per container may be transported in carry-on luggage – all together in a resealable 1-liter bag. Sharp objects, weapons, or dangerous substances are prohibited. Electronic devices like laptops or power banks are usually allowed but must be shown separately at security checks.

Prohibited items include knives with blade lengths over 6 cm, fireworks, gasoline lighters, pepper spray, and tools. Larger liquid containers or sprays are also not allowed. A complete list is available on the websites of airports or the federal police.

Many airlines allow an additional personal item alongside the carry-on luggage – e.g., a laptop bag, handbag, or small backpack. There are also differences here: While Lufthansa or Eurowings are generous, budget airlines often charge an extra fee. Size specifications for the additional baggage are usually 40 x 30 x 10 cm.
