If you're flying with Eurowings and need more than just hand luggage, you can't avoid checked baggage – and the cost depends heavily on which fare you've booked. Eurowings offers three weight classes: 12 kg, 23 kg and 32 kg. In the BASIC fare, every checked bag is an add-on purchase; in the SMART fare, a 23 kg suitcase is already included; and in BIZclass, two 32 kg bags travel free. Eurowings checked baggage 2026 – the weight classes at a glance

The ticket price with Eurowings includes a small bag (40 × 30 × 25 cm) in all fares, such as a laptop bag, handbag or small backpack. Anything beyond that – larger cabin baggage or checked baggage – depends on the fare booked. Unlike some other airlines, Eurowings doesn't specify a size limit in centimetres for checked baggage: only weight counts, split into the three classes of 12, 23 and 32 kg.

Which option suits you?

• Just a small bag (40 × 30 × 25 cm): nothing to add – included in every fare.
• Short trip, small suitcase: 12 kg checked baggage in the BASIC fare from €17 – the cheapest add-on option.
• Classic holiday, 1–2 weeks: 23 kg checked baggage – already included in the SMART fare, or bookable from €18 in the BASIC fare.
• Lots of luggage or a business trip: 32 kg checked baggage, or go straight for the BIZclass fare with 2 × 32 kg included.

All "from" prices apply per bag and flight route and vary depending on the route and travel period. At the airport, each passenger can check in up to 5 bags in total at the check-in desk – each weighing no more than 32 kg.

12 kg checked baggage – the affordable starter option

The 12 kg bag is the cheapest add-on in the BASIC fare, from €17. It's worth it for short trips of 2 to 4 days, where the small bag isn't enough but a 23 kg suitcase would be too much. Unlike large cabin baggage (55 × 40 × 23 cm, which travels with you in the cabin), this bag is checked in at the desk and travels in the hold.

The right suitcase here is a lightweight cabin trolley. Important when packing: 12 kg is quickly reached with a hardshell case that weighs 2 to 2.5 kg empty – a luggage scale helps you check this in advance.

23 kg checked baggage – the classic choice for holidays

For most holiday trips, the 23 kg bag is the right choice: in the BASIC fare it costs from €18 online, while in the SMART fare it's already included in the ticket price. A second 23 kg bag costs from €75 in both fares.

Since Eurowings doesn't specify a size limit for checked baggage, practically any standard suitcase in size M (roughly 64 to 69 cm) or L (up to around 80 cm) will do. The only real constraint is weight. Here's how to calculate it:

32 kg checked baggage – for heavy packers and BIZclass

If you're bringing a lot, book a 32 kg bag (BASIC from €67 online). In BIZclass, two 32 kg bags are included – along with two large cabin bags and a reserved overhead locker space. 32 kg is also the absolute maximum per item: for safety reasons, Eurowings will not accept heavier bags at all.

Excess baggage with Eurowings: €15 per kilo – how to avoid it

If a bag exceeds its booked weight, Eurowings charges an excess baggage fee of €15 per additional kilogram, per item at the airport, according to eurowings.com. The alternative is to book the next weight class up straight away (23 kg instead of 12 kg, 32 kg instead of 23 kg) – this is almost always cheaper than paying excess baggage at the desk. The absolute maximum remains 32 kg per item.

Empty weight: the underrated cost factor

3 tips to avoid excess baggage with Eurowings

1. Weigh your bag at home: a digital luggage scale costs less than a single kilo of excess baggage.
2. Put heavy items in your cabin baggage: books, chargers and shoes can go in the small bag (40 × 30 × 25 cm) or the large cabin bag – neither of these is weighed together with checked baggage at the Eurowings check-in desk.
3. Book the right weight class from the start: if you typically end up just over 12 or 23 kg, upgrading to the next class works out cheaper than paying €15 per kilo in excess baggage at the airport.

Which suitcase suits Eurowings checked baggage?

Since Eurowings doesn't impose a size limit on checked baggage, choosing a suitcase mainly comes down to weight, durability and capacity:

• For 12 kg: a lightweight cabin trolley under 2.5 kg empty weight, so as much of the weight allowance as possible is left for contents. Browse: Cabin Luggage.

Sports baggage with Eurowings

If you're bringing sports equipment, book sports baggage instead of a standard item: according to eurowings.com, skis and snowboards with accessories cost from €30, while golf bags, bicycles, diving equipment, surfboards and musical instruments cost from €50. Sports baggage is also capped at a maximum of 32 kg.

What isn't allowed in Eurowings checked baggage?

For children under 2, a second bag is included in the SMART fare; in the BASIC fare, their first 23 kg bag is free of charge. Eurowings states that it generally transports pushchairs, buggies, travel cots and child car seats free of charge in the hold, up to two items per child up to age 11. Eurowings vs. Ryanair & Lufthansa on checked baggage

With Ryanair, checked baggage is always an add-on with a fixed size limit (80 × 120 × 120 cm). With Eurowings, a 23 kg bag is included in the SMART fare, and can also be added to the cheaper BASIC fare – but without a size limit. With Lufthansa, no checked baggage is included on European flights in Economy Basic and Economy Light; it's only from Economy Comfort or Flex that a bag up to 23 kg is included (source: lufthansa.com, as of 16 September 2026).
