The Osprey Kestrel and its women's counterpart, the Osprey Kyte, are the hiking and trekking all-rounders from Osprey's range. Unlike the Farpoint/Fairview (traditional travel backpack opening), the Kestrel and Kyte are top-loading rucksacks with outdoor DNA – ideal for day hikes, hut-to-hut treks and multi-day trips. This guide shows you the sizes, features and who these models are perfect for.
Kestrel and Kyte – the two variants

Kyte

- Back length XS/S = adjustable 38–48 cm

The 4 sizes: 38/48/58/68 litres
Perfect companion for day hikes and short weekend tours.
The most popular size: enough for 2–3 days hut-to-hut hiking.
Hut-to-hut trekking with sleeping bag or travel with more luggage.
Long-distance tours with tent, sleeping bag and multi-day provisions.
Tip: Choosing between 38 and 48 L often causes difficulty. Rule of thumb: with the 38er you need to pack more precisely, the 48er forgives packing mistakes. If you often hike with waterproof jacket + spare jacket + stove, go for the 48er.
Kestrel or Kyte – the key features
AirScape back panel
